Soit's easy to get the impression that the bike is unreliable, poor workmanship etc, etc. I believe this is a common problem with many forums. I had panic attacks about the water pump issues - which there can be - but then someone comes along and says - no problem with it on my bike in 80,000 miles.
Ihave a 2001 f650gs dakar with 75000 miles on it. Apart from routine maintenance items (chain, oil, suspension seals), the only issue I had with it was the starter sprag clutch grenaded, so I had to change that and fish all of the metal shavings out of the oil. I never had surging issues and just use copper plugs.
